Most residence halls have at least some wireless network access in common areas like lounges or rec rooms. However, none of the residence halls has wireless access throughout, so students are advised to plug into the wired network in their rooms for optimum performance.
For those students who just can't live without a wi-fi network connection in their room ;-), we can recommend a few wireless access points that students can purchase on their own and connect to the ResNet network in their room.
Note: Please be aware that there is a significant distinction between a wireless access point and a wireless router. Access points merely extend the ResNet network to wireless devices. Routers, on the other hand, distribute private IP addresses and can disrupt service to other students. Devices that perform routing are not permitted on the ResNet network.
"What if I already own a wireless router"?
If you don't already own a wireless router, below are some wireless access points you may want to consider. Although any access point should work right out of the box, we've included custom instructions for three different models which you can follow to make sure you configure your access point with the minimum recommended security settings. The ResNet helpdesk provides basic configuration support for each of the models listed below.
