Options for dealing with poor cell phone coverage

If you’re looking to remedy poor cell phone service in your room, there are a few options available to residents…

Option 1: Land-line telephones

All residence hall rooms are equipped with a land-line telephone connection. To make a land-line call from your room, you need to have your own telephone plugged into the RED phone jack. 

Land-line telephones allow students to make free local calls. Students can also receive incoming long distance calls at no cost.

  • To make a local call, press 7 followed by the 10-digit number. If the call is to an on-campus extension, you can simply press the last five digits of the number (e.g. 31310).
  • To make a long distance call, you need to have your own long distance calling card. Press 7 followed by the card's 800 or local access number. 

Although rooms are typically equipped with multiple telephone jacks, only one phone number is assigned per room. However, each resident within the room can set up his/her own voice mailbox.

To activate voice mail on the land-line telephone in your room, contact telephone services at 610-683-4650 (x34650).

Option 2: Wi-Fi calling

Wi-Fi calling, or Voice over Wi-Fi (VoWiFi), lets you make voice calls using a Wi-Fi network rather than your carrier’s network. Although this technology is evolving and isn’t fully supported by all carriers and on all phones, it holds great promise for locations that have fast Wi-Fi available, but not necessarily good cell phone service (like many of our residence halls).

Many students are already familiar with Skype, FaceTime and Facebook Messenger which let you make “calls” over a Wi-Fi network. True Wi-Fi calling is a bit different in that it’s native to the phone. In other words, there’s no need to open a third-party app — the phone automatically switches to Wi-Fi for voice calling if/when cell service drops.

Option 3: Network extenders

Most cell carriers offer some form of network extender, a device that you can plug into the campus wired network to provide cell phone service within your room and immediate vicinity.
